Have you ever been bitten by an elephant? How about a mosquito? This is an example that it is the little choices in life that will decide your life’s destiny. In Darren Hardy’s The Compound Effect, the author writes of the principles that shape life, business, relationships, and more. Big decisions are what seem to determine one’s life’s outcome; choosing to quit a job, move out of state, get married, have children. And while these decisions sure have their part in shaping one’s life, Darren Hardy proves that little choices are just as important. He gives an example of asking the reader what they would pick between $3 million instantly or a penny doubled each day for the next 31 days. Many people would probably pick the million because a penny doesn’t seem like much; however, the results of the penny are astounding. By day 29 the penny is worth only $2.7 million, but then day 30 it is worth 5.3 million, and day 31 it is worth over 10 million. You see, it isn’t until the end—the last days—that we began to see the results of the penny. This is a perfect example of the compound effect. Every little choice we make right now, down to the very penny we spend and the calories we eat, have lasting effects. Right now, we don’t see it, but just like the elephant/mosquito example, it is the little things that bite, and it is the little choices that make a difference. It is the little choices that slowly add up until they are overpowering even the big. Making just one little choice today can impact your life 3 years from now. Do you want to change your life’s course in a way you can be proud of in the years to come or do you want to keep your life on the course it is now—letting small decisions you don’t even realize continue to bring your life on a downhill spiral that you will suffer from in the years to come? The choice is yours; therefore, Darren Hardy encourages the reader to change his life now—with the compound effect. Reading The Compound Effect can change your life’s destiny.

The Compound Effect changed my outlook on several areas of my life. Darren Hardy made this book chock-full of so many good points that I loved. He wrote in a way that made so much sense.

His story is such an inspiration and example of what he writes. Growing up his dad was a lot like my dad–strict and “no funny business allowed”, yet very wise and successful. I could totally relate with a lot of the things he was talking about, so it almost made the book seem like it was written for me.

Not only that, I was inspired to put to action his principles; I have started a tracking journal now, and am logging each and every penny I spend, and would like to make one of my eating habits as well. And let me tell you–his principles really do work. Tracking every single penny I spend, makes me way more conscious of what I buy, because I am much more aware of what I spend my money on. The Compound Effect is totally a book I reccomend.
