MY BOOK REPORT

All girls are self-conscience about their looks—weight, face, and figure—however, some girls worry so much about it that they almost kill themselves. This was the case for Belinda Rose. In her book Little Girl Crying she tells her sad story of suffering from anorexia nervosa and depression for 38 years of her life. Growing up in an abusive home, being bullied at school, and raped by a trusted friend, Belinda Rose started starving herself when she was only twelve years old. Before long it got to where she was surviving on only 200-400 calories a day because she thought she was fat and was desperate to lose weight. Not only that, she was hospitalized 13 times in 18 months because of her frail condition. She then went to binging and purging where she could stuff herself with whatever she wanted as long as she forced herself to vomit afterwards. Recovery to her seemed impossible as she felt lost and alone, as her disorder destroyed her mentally, physically, and spiritually. However, as a small child, Belinda had relied on her imaginary friend, Jesus, to comfort her and give her hope through her dark times. It was this love and devotion that eventually miraculously stilled the Voice of anorexia and lifted the darkness away.

Little Girl Crying was a challenging book to read. As I traveled Belinda’s journey with her in the form of a book, I was amazed by her story. I was also annoyed because every time someone tried to help her overcome this disorder, Belinda let it tear her down again. She was hospitalized so many times because she wouldn’t follow anyone’s advice and instead continue down her road to destruction. I just wanted to reach into the story, shake her by the shoulders and tell her, “You do not realize how much this is destroying your life. You don’t want to do this. Being skinny is not worth this.” But as I continued to read, I realized how often I have been just like her. There have been so many times that I tear myself down because I feel ugly or overweight, even though I know I am not. Yet ,what I need to realize is I am fearfully and wonderfully made. God made no mistake when He created me. Little Girl Crying was such an inspirational book that encouraged me to be very careful what my thoughts are because they are a powerful thing that I can either use to tear me down or build me up. The author wrote in a very engaging way, however, I would recommend this book to an older audience only because of its mature content. I did not think the author wrote in an inappropriate way at all, and I thought she handled the subject very well.
