MY BOOK REPORT:

Our Iceberg Is Melting by John Kotter and Holger Rathgeber is a cute, simple fable illustrating the principle of “changing and succeeding under any conditions”. A group of dignified emperor penguins in Antarctica, lived on an iceberg that had been their home for many years. The penguins relied on each other for warmth that kept each one alive and in return protected each other from all the harsh Antarctica holds. One day, however, their peaceful life was shattered when a curious penguin named Fred made an annihilating discovery that threatened their home. However, pretty much no one believes Fred; and the few that do, now have to come up with a solution to keep their colony safe before the harsh winter months arrive. This very small group has to come up with a way to convince all the other penguins of their danger and a solution to keep them safe. As all the birds give suggestions for solutions, Fred’s worry mounts as none of the solutions sound realistic. What does it take to keep their family together? Will they be able to find a way. While this story and its characters are fiction, it illustrates an important lesson of working well under whatever life brings your way. I thought the story line was really cute and a creative way to teach a lesson. I did think that the subtitle “changing and succeeding under any circumstances” didn’t describe the content very well. In my opinion the story seemed to teach how to work well as a team more than it taught how to change and succeed “under any circumstances”. The story itself was cute though and it did teach a good lesson, and since I rate books based on the content more than the title, I am giving it a four-star rating.
